shops, markets, restaurants

local shopping M. Jean Donnadieu has a stall on the main road in Vieussan from which he sells excellent fresh vegetables from his garden in season, as well as local honey and jams made by his wife, Natalie. Try her chesnut spread! The Carrière-Audier wine outlet up in the village also sells cheeses, jams and some fruit and vegetables. The neighbouring village of Mons La Trivalle (7 mins.) has all the basics: alimentation, tabac, boulangerie, café, garage and post office. The butcher's and chemist's are in Olargues (pictured opposite, 10 mins.)

Shop for your visit on the way to Vieussan at one of several supermarkets - if coming from the A75, go to Intermarché at Hérépian, or from the A9 (east), Géant at Béziers or the smaller Super-U at Murviel.

markets are the best places to buy a wide range of food and other goods: go to in Saint-Chinian on Sundays (and Thursdays - smaller). A bit further away, try the Saturday market in Pézenas. On Mondays, Bédarieux is the place to be. There are smaller markets in other local towns and villages.

bank machines are in Olargues, Lamalou (15 mins.), Cessenon (20) and in the Intermarché at Hérépian (20).

restaurants The Petit Nice in Roquebrun has a terrace overlooking the river and serves good food in large portions! At Olargues, we've had acceptable meals at the Hôtel-restaurant Laissac and Les Fleurs d'Olargues. Les Marronniers in Lamalou-les-Bains offers a very good standard of food with pleasant service. Hérépian offers the excellent L'Ocre Rouge. Half an hour away, La Boucherie (the restaurant is actually in the butcher's shop) at Magalas is an experience for meat-eaters. We also enjoyed the Parfums de Garrigues at Maraussan. Even the pricier restaurants will only cost you the number of that you'd pay in £ in England.
